Title: another dove just being: "Hawk took 1 of our Mourning D
Post by: Raven11:11 on January 09, 2011, 03:24:33 PM
ok so here I am sitting watching football and all the birds have been acting as if the predators are patrolling ... and I am facing the back yard glass sliding door and notice on our mourning doves fly under our roof and in panic , 1 -2 feet from the glass door.  A second later he is in the clutches  of what looks like a hawk - I assume we dont have falcons in Toronto ??/ but this predator had wings that bent backwards like boomerangs and was small. a tad larger than the dove. I could have also sworn he had a rope or something tied to his right talon.

i jumped up and the open the door and he flew over the fence into the park behind our yard and then i yelled and he let the dove go, last thing I saw was the dove flying full throatily away and the hawk in pursuit.  here I caught a close glimpse of it and YES he did have a thin rope tide to his right leg.

I feel sort of guilty that the doves we have ( had) are so comfortable in our yard, and now the raptors are taking them...

I know everyone must survive but we are very attached to the doves.

This happens in our yard too.  :(  It's mainly hawks taking Pigeons or Starlings, but last summer I also witnessed a Kestrel  snatch a sparrow right off the feeder.   :(

pardon my post ... I was in a bit of shock and the adrenaline going... plus with the football game going I was confused*

I feel a bit embarrassed too ... I should have know that falcons are common around here and i have seen + documented them many times in the past year and a half since I officially began birding.

It was a kestrel, 100% - but the last one I posted about this past summer that caught a field mouse  did not have a leash  on it.

This kestrel was fully grown and looked VERY well taken care of and beautiful !!

Our yard backs onto the melody village school park - aka Melody park.   He had a definite leash or piece of string / leather.

Sorry for the off topic post. But it helps get my mind off the massive constipation I have from these pain meds. ...
