Title: Fewer Finches?
Post by: Brian Bailey on January 25, 2011, 12:45:59 PM
I have noticed a distinct lack of finches in my neighbourhood this month.  Before Christmas, my nyger feeder was being depleted at an amazing rate.  I had a large flock of Goldfinches, lots of House Finches and Pine Siskins were regular as well.  This month, it has gone really quiet, even on the cold, snowy days.  The House Sparrows still come to my sunflower seed in big numbers, but not much else.

Anyone else noticing the same thing, or is it a phenomenon local to my yard?

We have more this year then ever before, about 30 - 40 daily, mostly Gold Finches, but a few House Finches and Pine Siskins too. Maybe yours started coming over to our yard?

Yeah, we're going through way more nyjer this year than ever!  Usually it's black oil I am buying weekly...  not now.

We have no House Sparrows which is peculiar but I won't complain about that one.

We have mostly house sparrows , Juncos and Chickadees.  I did see some Finches last Sat.  The House Sparrows are eating all the Nyger seed as well as the other bird seed in the regular feeder .. Arrggghh!

Almost the only birds that come to my feeders are finches - theres a flock of around 40 house and 30 gold that hangs around the feeders in the area. On the other hand, the flock of 100-150 finches in Erindale Park seems to have disappeared around the new year.
