A few years ago, my dog Domi, passed away. He was a Neapolitan mastiff and without a doubt, the best dog I have ever had.
It's now time to replace him...and while I recognize that I can't replace him, there were a few qualities he had that I want in my new pet. One of these being, he was a stay at home dog...he did not wander from my home even though he was loose. (I've decided against getting the same breed b/c I figure I'd do too much comparing.) I have always hated the idea of a dog remaining tied up (on my private property -- in public, a lead is a must in my mind, as well as the law).
I am considering a doberman or a dane...keeping in mind I have a 6 year old...does anyone know of any other dog that can be considered a stay at home dog? (Obviously huskies and hounds are out).

About half-way down is a 'Dog Breed Selector' search tool. It has a list of questions with multiple choice answers to help select a breed that best meets your requirements.

My daughter breeds Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers - not a well known breed yet, but they are purebred. They are a medium sized dog , nice temperament and make very good family pets. My daughter is also a trainer and shows dogs at competitions. When a dog is properly trained it should not be necessary to ever have it tied up.
You are right about certain breeds (hunting breeds) having a tendency to run.
The site that Zed provided is a good start. You need to make sure that whatever breed you choose will be the right fit for both your family and the dog. My daughter interviews prospective owners to make sure that they are choosing the right breed, before she will sell a puppy to them.

Hey I tried the site....had some great suggestions...including neapolitan mastiff again...back then when I bought him I had it narrowed down to the great dane and the neo...it didn't suggest the dane for me...wonder why...

hounds aren't good -- especially since I live in a rural wooded area....huskies and samoyeds aren't good for sticking around either...not sure about the malamute...

According to the quiz, my top breed is my beloved German Shepherd. I have had four in my lifetime and would never change breed. There was a Dane and a Bull Mastiff in our training class and they were all great breeds. I guess the main consideration comes down to breeder though. You want a healthy dog with a good temperament and a breeder that can match you and your family with the right dog. Good luck, and post some pics when you have your new friend!
