Title: Northern shrike
Post by: mr.sharp-photo on January 29, 2011, 12:27:52 AM
This guy landed for about 15 seconds then disappeared quickly.

I can't see the distinct curve on its nose, but due to the thickness of the black strip near the eyes, i assume its a northern shrike.

Nice capture of the cutie killer.  You have a Northern here, best ID point for Northern vs Loggerhead is the eye strip, if the stripe is above the eye it's a Loggerhead and if it's lower, then it's a Nothern!

that's what i thought...
but the hooked beak (or apparent lack of hook in this pic) confused me.

thanks

Also a Loggerhead Shrike in Ontario in winter would be extremely unusual.  It's a pretty safe bet that any shrike you see around here in winter is a Northern.

Yup second that
Northern Shrike
I got a shot of this guy today at the Col Sam Smith Park.

Saw the barring of the underparts.

Was sitting at the highest possible branch :(

(another difference from Loggerhead)
