Title: Jack Darling Park-Harlequin Duck and other waterfoul
Post by: Will on February 05, 2011, 09:33:44 PM: I spent an hour at Jack Darling this afternoon from 2:00-3:00 scanning the lake for wintering waterfoul. Sighted the following;

3 Gadwall, 30+ Mallards, 15-20 Redhead, 400+ Greater/Lesser Scaup, 1 male Harlequin Duck :D:D, 5 White-winged Scoter, 200+ Long-tailed Duck, 300+ Common Goldeneye, 100+ Bufflehead, 100+ Red-breasted Merganser, also seen were numerous Herring/Ring billed gulls and Canada Geese/Mute Swans

A great day for waterfoul, with the Harlequin as the lifer/highlight, I was very excited to see it!!!

Most of the waterfoul were in large rafts on the waterfront were located in the Northeast section of the park (from the parking lot, walk to the waterfront trail and turn left, then walk to the farthest "point" with the picnic bench, the large rafts of ducks are easily observed from there).

Post by: Will on February 06, 2011, 11:15:28 PM: As you are walking away from the parking lot towards the waterfront, most of the waterfoul were in large rafts to the left. They were visible from the farthest "point" away from Rattray Marsh. And naaa i didn't have enough time to look for redpolls, all I went looking for was waterfoul. But next time I will make sure to do so as I have seen very few redpolls this winter :(

Post by: Reuven_M on February 07, 2011, 07:34:01 AM: Thats where I was looking, I could see rafts very far away (as in closer to the rhodedendron gardens etc.), they must have moved closer over the day.

Post by: Will on February 07, 2011, 07:50:55 PM: Yeee the waterfoul was moving closer when I was there, the wind was blowing across the lake towards Rattray and bring the rafts of ducks with it.
