I am guessing mallard. It was with hundreds at Coburg today as I was there to take some photo's of the laughing gull. The black bill is throwing me though.

82 Views on a birding sight and no one seems to know? Were my expectations too high?

My call is a Cross Hybrid Mallard. Mallards frequently interbreed with domestic stock, producing a bewildering variety of patterns and colors. They also hybridize with wild species such as the closely related American Black Duck and even occasionally with Northern Pintails.

And another whole new species is born.
-
Or a partial albino American Black Duck. A size would really help to ID.
If it's larger than the typical Mallard or ABD, then it's likely a domestic mix.
-
Thanks guys, size was the same as the mallard females it was with.

Mallards are not at all picky who they choose as a mate. Almost any odd duck you find is the product of a Mallard meeting a new friend of any sort. They just won't stay close to home. Always out on the town.
