Title: Pair of Pileated Woodpeckers in Jack Darling Park
Post by: lovemypt on February 14, 2011, 08:35:59 AM: Hello to all you birders looking for the Pileated woodpecker. I was down at Jack Darling park on Sunday and checking out the duck situation when I found a pair of Pileated woodpeckers just west of the main parking lot between Jack Darling and Rattray park. They were working on a tree just 15ft from the main path and not bothered by the passerbys. I have preiviously been looking for them as I have seen the tree holes and heard them but this was a really treat to have them so close for about 20mins.

Post by: angieinto on February 14, 2011, 10:50:09 AM: We saw them on Saturday and were thrilled! :D It had been 5 years since we'd last saw one, and that was only for a couple seconds. We watched this pair from the main path for about ten minutes with our binoculars . Rob was able to get a couple good pics with his new camera and stronger zoom.

I braved the element this morning and when back down the park. The Pileated is still working on the same tree as last week and can be seen very well from the main path. He has done quite a job of the tree. He sometimes flies back and forth between the tree and woods just in behind but usually shows back up at the tree very quickly.

Not much else flying around today, too much of a change in the weather and the path is very icy in the Rattray woods

Post by: lovemypt on February 22, 2011, 12:35:15 PM: I usually get there in the morning around 8.30 but the time varies when I saw them once at 10am and next time at noon. When you enter Jack Darling park, head for back parking lot. As you make your way towards Rattray marsh on the paved path, you will see the tree on your right ( 500m) from parking lot. The pair has been working on this tree quite a bit. They also hang around in the bush directly behind. I have heard them in the Rattray marsh so you may have to listen to find out which area they are in

Post by: Luv2Bird on February 22, 2011, 12:36:43 PM: We went to Rattray both Sunday and Monday looking for them, but we only went up to the bridge at the west end of Jack Darling. Will have to check back and find the tree that you mention. Thanks for sharing!

We saw both the other weekend, and then this past weekend, we saw the male on the mentioned tree. A few big holes in the tree now and he had his head deep in one of the holes working at it.

Post by: dodo on February 22, 2011, 09:50:12 PM: In June 2009 I saw one in an area beside the Brickworks that is fenced in for dogs. I had my camera but I had to take a picture through the chain link because the gates were locked.The next day I noticed someone had cut a big hole in the fence.

i searched fruitlessly from 1:30 to 3 pm today. most time spent at the tree you folks have mentioned, and it certainly has its share of pileated holes! the area was lovely, but relatively birdless. perhaps i got there too late? i wonder if anyone else has seen the p. woodpeckers today?
