Title: White-winged Scoter
Post by: Luv2Bird on February 14, 2011, 09:15:56 PM
By Burlington Lift bridge canal .. Feb. 5th  - Both a male and female swam close to us.  The male dove and brought up some sort of shell fish that looked bigger than a golf ball and swallowed it.

Great shot! The shellfish were probably a clump of zebra mussels (unless you actually saw that it was one animal?)

An FYI if you go. Due to the construction, you have to park on the SW side of the bridge then walk across the bridge and go to the east side. Don't get run over by a car. It limits the number of shots you can take

I don't believe the east side is accessible due to the construction. I have been parking at the lot just west of there on Lakeshore, by the bus stop, and then walking down the path to the west side pier. Probably a hundred WW scoters there today, but the bulk of the ducks were on the Hamilton side of the lift bridge.

We were there on Sunday.  We parked in a parking lot up the street, forget the name, but if you come over the bridge going towards Toronto, just after the bridge, turn right, the road takes a curve left and on the left is a parking lot.

We saw all the usual ones plus WWScoter, 2 Surf Scoters, Ruddy Duck etc etc etc.  As you come onto the edge of the canal, keep an eye out in the first tree on the left, think it was a Hawthorne, my husband found a mocker in there.  Did not see the Peregrines, but were at Lasalle earlier and think we saw an eagle sitting waaaaaaaaaay out on the ice.

Good birding
