I drove by the Spit yesterday and briefly stopped. I wanted to check out the woods behind the parking lot. I took a quick walk in and heard a chirping that I haven't heard since last spring. I couldn't locate a bird, but I heard two songs that sounded like the happy warbler song.
Today, I was at the Spit again. Near the parking lot (this time, on the east side of the road in front of the parking lot), i heard the same cheery call. All I could spot were two chickadees, but they weren't making the call.
Later on, a birder told me she swore she was a black and white warbler in the Spit.

Are you positive it wasn't the chickadee song? - sounds like a very clear, high "feeee-beeee"
-
obviously i've heard chickadee songs till the cows come home.
like i said, it sounded like a really happy chickadee. a very melodic chickadee song that i've never heard come from a chickadee.
out of curiosity, i listened to a B&W warbler call.

I think it sounded like the last of the calls in that loop (i.e. the warbler call on that site has 3 calls over the 10 seconds. the 3rd call sounded like what i heard).
I will be the first to admit that warbler calls are not my strength. but the first thing i thought of when i heard it was "it sounds like spring. it sounds like a warbler." hopefully someone else noticed this as well.

Could it have been a Brown Creeper..... a very cheery spring song! Have a listen at: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Creeper/sounds (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Creeper/sounds)
Happy birding! Cheers Terry

The other thing to look for when you hear an unexpected bird call is a Northern Mockingbird. They are very good mimics (hence the name) but they usually do a mix of several different species in quick succession.

there is definitely a mockingbird in the area. i saw it yesterday, but its outside the Spit (it lives either in the garden on the east side or nests in the warehouse/buildings on the west side). but no, the call was not a mockingbird call. yesterday, i heard 1-2 birds in the tall grass/reeds west of the parking lot making the call. they made the call 5 to 10 times over a 2 minute period. today, the same call was made around 5 times, not in quick succession. no other calls were heard.

Are you familiar with carolina wren song?
-
Another bird to consider is a Sparrow. I heard a few Song Sparrows singing today.
-
house finches are singing a lot right now

nope. was longer, not as shrill and more musical.

not even close to any of the wren songs.

most definitely not this either.
if anything, it may have been close to a house finch call, but less excited, or a wee bit slower and 1-2 seconds longer.
