Title: adult male King Eider still at Leslie Spit April 2
Post by: stvgarrett on April 02, 2011, 12:30:43 PM
Saw the bird this morning, but it was pretty frustrating with just my 8x36 binoculars. So if you have (or can beg / borrow / steal) a scope, you should bring it along. He's pretty shy about coming anywhere near shore, although a couple of birders said that first thing this morning he was much nearer the north end of cell 3 but they spooked him and he flew into the middle.
Here's a pretty good fix on where I spotted him (look for the green arrow):

Yes, he stays out on the edges of the large duck group but stays in middle of cell. He still likes to hang around with the mergansers, so look for him where you see mergansers. You will need a really big lens or binoculars to see him

Was also there today and at the start of cell 3 where the King eider is liking to hang there was an Eastern meadowlark flushed on the trail, also Common Loons off Pipit point and Horned and Red-necked grebes were plentiful. Photos of the King Eider and other birds from today can be seen on my website

The King Eider was present also on Sunday. Same spot.

No luck with the Eider today. It was pretty quiet in general on the spit in fact. Weather was great though.
