Title: Northern Mockingbird

There is at least one Northern Mockingbird in my neighbourhood in Markham.  I have never seen one before.  How unusual is it to see one this far north?

I am not sure if the population is up this year as I haven't really pay attention to this bird before, but it seems they are everywhere this winter and spring. I have seen one in just about every park around. I even had one come to my small water fountain just outside my living room window for a drink ( I leave on and heated all winter for the birds).

And the Northern Mockingbird is not so northern, either. I watched and listened every morning to this enchanting bird while vacationing in the Dominican Republic just a few weeks ago.

We've been waiting for our local Mocker to return this Spring, but not yet.  He's been around the last three years and hoping we see him for a fourth.  He visits the yard for a drink and occasional bath; then flies back over to the main intersection and does his mocking in some cedar type shrubs.

A mocking bird, that's pretty cool. I live around the Markham area so I will be sure to keep my eyes peeled.

I live in Cornell -- 9th Line and Hwy 7.  I've heard it imitate a robin, a cardinal, a bluejay, and all the assorted Finches and Sparrows that are around.  It's fascinating to me, especially after teaching To Kill a Mockingbird for several years.
