Title: trying to remember a birding term

I remember being out with some birders one time and one of them used a term that I liked, but promptly forgot. The term refers to something like the essence of a bird that you glean from a glance when it flits by your peripheral vision, that tells you what the bird probably is. Something like a cross between the words "gist" and "hunch".

Anyone?
