Title: RYI - Point Pelee
Post by: Andy on April 26, 2011, 11:26:11 AM
Given the delayed spring and current forecast of rain, I am re-considering my ETA at Pelee this year. I was originally planning for May 4-6, but am now wondering if I should delay a bit. I am more interested in numbers than rarities. Comments? Prognostications?

Well, who knows what will happen, but the migration seems to be right on time as of today.

I think you might hit a very good time.  With all the cold weather and storms this month, I'm expecting a surge in the next week or so.  You'll be ahead of the leaves, but statistically, you probably have a better chance of more species the following week.

Years ago, I used to make 2 3-day trips: early May and mid May.  It was always different from one week to the next, but not consistently better one time or the other.

Oh, and I should add that rain, while not being pleasant to bird in, seems to, almost as a rule, have better birding than nicer weather.

As another rule - the best time in Pelee is either right before or right after you are there, whenever you are there.

The story of my life!
I don't know how many times I've heard
"you should have been here yesterday"
or the ever popular
"you just missed it"
Of well, we've all been there right?

C'mon, Andy, don't give up! My wife and I will be down there once again on Mother's Day weekend with arrival on Friday the 6th. Admittedly, the last three years on that weekend have not been "high yielding" for us and the weather has been iffy at best. But, I saw my first ever adult male Summer Tanager on that rainy weekend years ago and spotted the uncommon "rusty" version of the same bird on the same day. I predict good things this year so don't change your plans. Besides, aren't you hankering for some authentic Mexican food? Ole!

Thank you all for your comments. But, as already noted, I am sure the best time will be just before we get there or immediately after we head back. We just booked at the Days Inn for the 4th through the 6th.

FYI, if any of you are still looking for a room, Days Inn now has availability at $110 a night. That is still exorbitant, but better than the $165 they quoted last Tuesday.

Angie and I will be down there right after you.  May 9 to 11.  We can compare reports.   :)
