We are approaching server limits and I need to start pruning parts of the outdoorontario site. Our Photo Gallery is a large component of our disk space, so I am asking gallery users to please delete some of your images. Hopefully we can continue to offer gallery space, but that will depend on how much it can be reduced from its present size.

Hi Andy, I have 86 images posted maybe I should just delete my gallery. That may be enough to free up the server? I am not sure what the total space is I am using but it may ease up things a bit.
-
Would you like some more drive space? I currently have quite a few older SCSI HD's in the 4gig to 20gig range if that helps.
Otherwise, I'd be more than happy to start cleaning out my gallery.
-
Hi Kin. The drive space is on the ISP we use, so we can't add to the quota without paying for it. Don't delete all your stuff; just do some pruning. I'll check into how much space individuals are using in the gallery and Ill report back.

Hi Andy. My gallery is gone( total of 49 photos). From now on I'll use my web to post pictures in here. That should help for now.
-
Thank you all for either deleting or offering to do so. I had a closer look at the gallery, and you guys are not the big offenders. There are many users who have uploaded files as large as 2.9 MB. Please check your gallery to see if you have any files larger than about 250K. There is no need to have mega-res photos for web viewing. I will wait about a week for users to make deletions themselves. After that, I will make the deletions myself. We are now at about 95% of our quota, so I have no choice.

Sounds like we have people posting full-size jpegs straight out of the camera.
Does the gallery software have anyway of limiting that, either by file size or by resolution?
-
Yes, Kin, that appears to be what people are doing. I was sure I configured the gallery to only accept images that were less than 400K. But on checking last night, I see that this option was not enabled. I'll reset it and hopefully that will help with future uploads. Once the megapix files currently in the gallery are removed, I think we will be OK with the disk quota.
Craig, thanks for cleaning up. But your images are around 750K each. If you can optimize them for the web, that would save us a few MB.

Hi Andy
I deleted half my pics from 26 to 13, hope this will give you more space to work with . If you need more, please let us know. Thanks for allowing me to post my pictures on your web site.
Good birding to all

This is the last call for cleaning up your photos in the gallery. Thank you to those who have already done so. Starting tomorrow, I will begin the deletion process. All mega-pixel photos will be removed.
