I've seen a lot of blue jays doing a lot of different things over the years, but I think I witnessed something new on Saturday: a Blue Jay catching flying insects. It was flying out from a high perch, snatching a bug out of the air and returning. Catching a glimpse through the trees, I assumed it was a Great Crested Flycatcher, but when I got a better look it was clearly a jay. I've seen some warblers , and even Red-headed Woodpeckers hunt that way, but I can't ever recall seeing a Blue Jay do it.

We had a lot of fun one afternoon last summer watching a House Sparrow in our backyard flying around chasing a cicada, he eventually caught it, but it took him a while.
