Post by: ravynne40 on May 29, 2011, 11:58:46 AM
Yesterday I had a great opportunity to take part in the Bird Festival at Col. Sam Smith Park. I had a blast.

It was also nice to meet a few people from the list! Angie and Rob it great talking with you guys and I hope to run into you again soon! Nice to put a name to the face eh? :)
John it was good to see you again as well. Hope everyone had fun!

Hubby told me that the poor little screech owl was frightened by a Red-winged black bird flying into the tent! they eventually put up the sides, poor little thing.

anyways here's looking to next year!

Nice to meet you too Irene!  :D

The festival this year seemed a bit bigger then last year and I hope it continues to grow every year.
Next year we'll probably volunteer in some way, either with Wild Birds Unlimited or the Canadian Peregrine Foundation.

Oh, poor little Otis (the Screech Owl from Mountsberg Raptor Centre), I didn't hear about that incident.

We didn't even make it on one of the official walks but saw some nice birds on our own, Wilson's Warbler, Canada Warbler (Both Lifers), Bay-Breasted Warbler (Lifer for me, not Rob) and Black-pole Warblers.

And I only had to yell at one lady about an off leash dog!!

lol! I wish I was as brave as you, sometimes them off leash owners are a little intimidating. I don't get it though, there IS an offleash area for the dogs, they just refuse to use it.
I also hope that the festival grows, it is a beautiful park and it was a first time for me for the Canada Warbler too, I believe it was a male too.

Cool meeting ya Irene!

I'm working later hours these days, which got us arriving later, and missing the walks.  See what happens next year.  The walks are always interesting as I do learn a thing or two during them from some of the more knowledgeable folk.

But we did pretty good on our own with a couple new lifers as Angie mentioned.  Happy she saw the Bay-breasted, which I saw my first a couple weeks back.  Neither of us likes to be one up on the other in the life list...  locally anyways.  She's a bit of a traveler and I am not.

Hey Irene, it was a nice surprise running into you!

A lot of interesting booths (yours included) and the bird walks made for a great morning!
