Title: Snipe
Post by: Whittam on June 05, 2011, 05:59:44 PM
Spotted a Snipe today making an awful racket calling repeatedly.  Seemed like strange behavior!  But he did stay very still while I took some shots!  Cheers Terry

Nice shot!
Question, what is the difference between a snipe and a woodcock?
I would have thought this was a photo of a woodcock.

A Woodcock is chunkier and browner overall, with reddish brown belly. Their habitats are also completely different, you wouldn't see a Woodcock on a post like that. Woodcocks are secretive forest birds, keeping to the ground, while Snipes are found in open areas.

Thanks Thomas for the info. I've seen woodcocks on the farm before, but have never photographed one. Usually they are very well camofluaged and you don't see them till they literally "explode" off the ground and scare the witts out of you!
