Title: Seeking photos of Red-Winged Blackbirds in Toronto
Post by: jyazer on June 30, 2011, 01:41:07 PM
Hi all,

I'm a freelance journalist writing a short article about the behaviour of the red-winged blackbird in Toronto, and in particular the defence of its nesting area in and around Queen's Park. My article stems from some incidents involving the birds in that area swooping down on pedestrians, and in one case physically attacking the head of a passer-by. If anyone has a photo of a red-winged blackbird that was taken in Toronto, especially one taken in the Queen's Park area, I would love to see it. I'm in the process of securing a publisher, and I can inquire about compensation for your work.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Yazer

I have quite a few. All are taken in Colonel Samuel Smith Park. You can check them out on my flickr account if you like. Here's a link.

They can be a bit nasty at times. I've seen them go after Canada Geese. Once at High Park one of them followed me all the way down a hill squawking all the way.

Here's a recent shot but, unfortunately it was taking in Whitby. I live in Scarborough, I get RWBBs in my backyard almost every day. Perhaps maybe I can take  a few shots and send them to you.

I have yet to be attacked, not that I am seeking such an experience either.  I have photos of RWBBs eating from my hand in High Park and dozens of other pics of them as well (none at Queens Park though).  If you would like me to e-mail you a couple, I'd be happy to...  and don't seek compensation, only credit for the photo if used.

I do like the one shared here with the danger sign.

I hope the article isn't a negative bit on them.  I admire the RWBBs and the fearless attitude they have defending their nest/young.
