Title: Cedar Waxwings
Post by: Rob'in'To on July 12, 2011, 10:34:51 AM
A couple of the folk on this board know I have this fascination/admiration for Cedar Waxwings and luck come my way to see a small flock enjoying a pond recently.  I spent quite some time watching them hunt, perch and make that distinct sound of theirs.  A great true first experience for me and hopefully not the last time.

Ten I counted at once but could hear more.

They truly are beautiful birds.

Watching them hunt and flutter over the pond was amazing.

Kingbirds were also enjoying the insect feast.

I will never tire seeing a Cedar Waxwing.  Next on my list will be searching out Bohemians though.  How far north do they go for the summer?

Hi Rob

Great shots of the Waxwings, I really like your action(flyingshots). I saw a huge flock ( plus 30-40) flying around the river at Riverwood last feeding on the bugs but were not able to get close enough for shots like yours

Ontario is really peripheral to their range - which is mostly to the west.  During the atlas there were a few in far northern Ont.  Even in winter they are rather irregular here.  Not so hard to find in Banff.

Thanks all.  And especially Pat for the details regarding Bohemians.  Ah well, one day...

I hear Cedar Waxwings daily around my home but only see them when they fly over.  Scoping the trees around me, just can't find them.  So seeing them at this pond was a real treat and a definite highlight of my summer of very little birding.
