Wow great capture.

Did he pierce the fish with his beak ?

Wow!

I have seen them throw a fish back into the water so as to stun them but have never seen a piercing. Nice catch.

Sure is a great shot but if he speared that fish it was by accident. Hey! He still speared it and it makes for a very cool and very rare capture. You know the old saying..."I'd rather be lucky than good". Good work.

Maybe so, but I have seen and photographed this particular GBH ad nauseam...I have pictures of him spearing fish on at least 8 separate instances...right through! Lovely blood and bits coming down, etc etc. I'd be curious to hear the reasons for your statement...

Not impossible but it's just not typical behaviour. This guy seems to have gone outside the box.

Ha! Yes, that's why he's my best pal...I've watched him (or her? anyone?) for a cumulative total of a thousand hours...just a guess...

Nice shot! I always wondered when they pierce the fish, how they get it off to open their beaks ..without losing the fish..

Thanks, Irene. This particular bird would do a lot of wiggling, free the fish, flip it up in the air, then catch it in his (or her?) open mouth. "Okay, but where are the pictures?" you might ask, and you'd be right to! It was a good time, I thought, to have run out of memory...

oh geez Jack, don't you carry an extra card? LOL, I learned that the hard way believe it or not so now i just stick an extra card in my pocket. My card failed one time and I had the most awesome pictures on it and of course still being rather new to photography, I formatted the darned thing not knowing that I could have recovered the photos ...we learn by our mistakes, except my mistakes are huge..hard lessons sometimes LOL!
But I figure that is part of growing and learning :)
