How recently did you see the armies of coot and sanderling?

Is that a large crayfish in the second picture?

These were taken early October 2011. I had never seen a flock of American Coots before and since then I have seen small groups offshore towards Toronto. There were several small flocks of Sanderlings of 5-10 birds feeding on the spit opposite the marina but left within 15 minutes.
I think the Hoodie has a crayfish and he/she struggled to swallow it but eventually gave up I think.
