Title: Mushrooms, mushrooms and more mushrooms....
Post by: gary yankech on October 30, 2011, 07:51:30 PM
Not really wildlife but, a collection of mushroom shots I took this year, most of which I took in Rouge Park or within the GTA.

Thanks....when the birds are being shy, and other creatures aren't out, I try to get at least something I know will not run or fly away. With over a thousand species in the East,  mushrooms though are tough to ID down to  species level, unless you do extensive sporing printing and use a microscope. Even then, it can still be very hard and many times, I don't even bother. Especially the white ones. Nice photos shots are good enough for me.

Great collection, thanks for posting.  I must look harder; I haven't seen most of these.

Gary ... earlier this year there was a "Mushroom Walk" at Riverwood.  My mom attended and said it was excellent!   :D  Apparently they're going to do another one - next year?

Cool! Thanks for the info, there are many mushroom walks and workshops.....I did not know about the Riverwood walk, is it a club? When it is? I know of several people who lead fungi walks but, I have not yet gone on one. I like going on my own because, if I want to stop and take a lengthy photo, I can. I have attended in class workshops though, to help me with me IDing. Thank again, let me know. It sounds interesting.

Hi Gary.  It was at the Riverwood Conservancy (park).  Scroll down the following link to "Marvelous Mushrooms".  http://www.theriverwoodconservancy.org/ ... _final.pdf (http://www.theriverwoodconservancy.org/MGCfiles/Forms/DiscoveryTRC_Summer2011_final.pdf)

Open to the public but limited to 15 people per walk!  Next date unknown, I'm assuming it will perhaps be next September again?  Hopefully sooner!  :D

Apparently the Geology of Riverwood walk is also excellent!  Another one that my mom attended that I couldn't make it to on that date.  This is another walk they're going to do again at some point next year!

Nice collection Gary!

Fungi make great subjects.  I wish I'd had a chance to shoot more of them this year.

I'm not a mushroom expert, but my guesses:

#1 also Mycena haematopus (like #7)
#2 Mycena leaiana looks right to me
#3 Clitocybula ocula?
#4 Russula laurocerasi?
#5 Larch Bolete (Suillus paluster)?
#6 Birch Bolete (Leccinium scabrum)?
#7 Mycena haematopus looks like a good bet
#8 I'm thinking Russula emetica or Russula paludosa

If you really want to ID them after the fact, it's helpful to take some supplementary shots just to record details you can't capture in a nice composition.

**Update...... #1 is Mycena haematopus
                     #3 is Clitocybula ocula
#6  Birch Bolete (Leccinium scabrum) is my guess too but not 100% sure, need a spore print which I did not get
#8  Russula emetica or Russula paludosa, those were my thought as well

Thanks Brian for the suggestions and photo tip!
