Title: No Pix but...
Post by: Axeman on May 11, 2007, 07:39:47 PM
I'm sorry I don't have pictures...but I saw a bird that I could not find in my Peterson's the other day...it had a yellow skull cap like a white throated sparrow and its wings / body were black and white...it was the size of a warbler....it was in a birch tree eating whatever the birch gives off as a fruiting body.....there were also a number of Am. Goldfinches around...and ummm...I also saw something that looked like a Wilson's Warbler...it had the greenish / grey head...goldish body...it wasn't a female Am. goldfinch....

Hi Axeman. It is hard without pictures if the crown of the head was yellow. Take a look at a female Golden-crowned Kinglet on the first bird. Second one could have been any number or female warblers. Good luck on your search, Bruce

Thanks Bruce -- I did look at the f golden crown kinglet....nope....the wings were black with I believe white wing bars and the chest was  white....head black....I live near Ayton which is in Grey-Bruce....if that helps....

To my dying day I will always maintain the second bird was a Wilson's Warbler...lol...

Could your yellow-crowned visitor be a Yellow-rumped Warbler?

Thanks....no, it wasn't the yellow rumped warbler...the only yellow was on its head...and the black and white were pretty strong / defined contrasts....it was definitely only black, white and yellow on the crown of the head.

Am I crazy?

With my keen eye and description, I"m really not sure how you experienced birders missed the identity...I got it...looking at Don's Birds....chestnut sided warbler...I was a little off in the description.
