Is it possible to enter the Leslie Spit on weekdays? Is it safe? I realize that the park is officially closed during the week due to the trucking activity, but I'm wondering if it's okay to at least explore the base lands? I love visiting on weekends, but it's just not always convenient - and I live so tantalizingly close, I find myself wishing I could just pop down there whenever I have some free time.

its closed during weekdays. there is lots of activity (dump trucks going in and out) between 8ish at 4ish. i wouldn't recommend trying to go in for a number of reasons, but the first would be safety. its a busy stretch of road and those are big trucks. but the 2nd reason: you'll get turned back.
in the summer, people go in after 4 PM and no one stops them. in the winter, the sun's setting by 4 so there's little to no point.
hope that answers your question.

Richard is quite right! I went to the L.S. last winter, one Thurs at 2 pm or so. A construction worker shouted at me: "Get the hell outta here, buddy!"

the other school of thought is: you piss off the city by going there when a HUGE sign says you shouldn't be there, then they'll be more vigilant and not allow people there after 4:00.
and trust me, last spring was really when you wanted access after 4 PM.

Thank you for the replies - sounds like wise advice. I would certainly be mortified to be turned back. I guess I was also just wondering if I was missing out on some well kept birding secret! I will patiently await some free weekends.
