Title: A few surprises @ Second Marsh- Dec. 24
Post by: beresford on December 24, 2011, 12:24:27 PM
It wasn't the most abundant day I've ever had @ Second Marsh but there were some real, quality birds nonetheless. I started the morning @ Whitby Harbour and there was the usual assortment as well.

  Highlights include:

  Whitby Harbour

-Tonnes of red-breasted and common mergansers
-5m 12f long-tailed ducks
-4 gadwall and 6 black ducks
-4 trumpeter swans
-the snowy owl... looked like it had found a snack :)

Second Marsh

-1 juvenile N.shrike
-500+ greater scaup
-100+ common goldeneye- didn't see any barrows
-4 robins
-1m downy woodpecker
-2 RTH
-1 adult Black crowned night heron- a big surprise- near the SW corner- it took off and flew to into the fringe of trees on the south shore
-2 ravens again near the SW corner in the fringe of trees on the south shore
-1 first or second year bald eagle- it was perched in the same group of trees as the ravens before it took off to the east hugging the coast- a nice Christmas treat :)

Merry Christmas and happy birding to one and all!!
