I thought I spotted a few a couple of days ago

tonight I am sure.. 3 of them zippin around my ash tree as darkness falls.

Must be a feast for them tonight. Riding my bike tonight was a chore.  Clouds of tiny insects made it tough to see and breathe..

They seem to have come out early this year.. but then again .. so did everything else.  I saw bats back at the end of April at a friends place in Mississauganear Dundas and Mississauga Rd.  His place backs onto the credit valley so he gets lots of interesting wildlife there.  Haven't seen any in the city yet though.

The timing is about right. It might of interest to note that of all the winged insectivores the bat is judged to be the most efficient predator of all, including swallows and dragon flies. I recall reading that their technique is somewhat like that of some whales, in that they 'scoop' the air and simply filter out their catch as opposed to catching individuals. So put up a bat box in your yard...

My neighbour's cat came home with a small brown bat last week.
It was still alive at the time but did not survive.
It was in broad daylight at the time when the bat should have been asleep and in hiding.
We wondered if some other event preceded the cat's discovery as a way to explain things.
