I had a Red Bellied Woodpecker at my feeder twice this week. One time was this morning. I'm trying to get a pic but they are so jittery. Just the slightest movement as I reached for my camera this a.m. was enough to send him flying. That's while I'm on the other side of a window. Whoever named this bird must not know the difference between the head and the belly. There is no red where the name suggests but a beautiful red patch of feathers that run from the top of the head down the nape of the neck. I have never seen one before so I feel fortunate. Still hoping to get a pic, set up the camera on the tripod, using the remote and hoping to get lucky. Living close to the Upper Niagara one can expect strange feathered visitors at any time.

I stand corrected. The Red Bellied woodpecker does have a small smudge of a reddish hue on their underside. This was pointed out to me by a forum denizen and I thank him/her for the info. Never having seen one before I looked this bird up in a book entitled Birds of Eastern North America that also makes the claim there is no red belly, I guess it's a matter of perspective, there is a slight reddish smear underneath that if you don't see it from the correct angle, you could very easily mistake it for a shadow or dirt. Still waiting for the bird to reappear but nothing yet.

I have a Red Bellied WP that shows up in my back yard in St. George occasionally.  He takes peanuts from the feeder.  Sometimes he looks for spots in the maple tree to store them and sometimes he flies off with the peanut.  At our previous bird yard near Delhi, we had many RBWP.  We even had a family a couple of summers back and saw mother feeding the young.  They are a beautiful bird!

Finally, yesterday I took this thru the window. There were two woodpeckers there a second before I took this. I think this is the female. They are very wary and take flight at the slightest motion. Sorry about the size and clarity...my first attempt at posting a pic.
