This hawk flew in briefly and out again. The area is mixed forest (oak, maple, birch, white pine, hemlock) with nearby pasture farmland. Lots of lake front. It was near Sharbot Lake Ontario.

Is it a Broad-winged? The flight shot is blurry but suggests some potentially useful field marks.

Taken with 100mm macro lens!

It stayed long enough to change to a telephoto lens.

Thanks! It was great to see it since it just flew in, perched in the early morning sun for a few minutes, then flew out again: it would have been easy to miss it entirely as it didn't call etc.

If you haven't done so report it on eBird.

Broad-winged Hawks are quite common breeders in forested areas of Ontario (hence the large numbers during the fall migration), but largely absent from the agricultural Southwestern Ontario.
