I'm about 90% sure that I saw a white-eyed vireo in the wet woods this morning. I only had fleeting looks at the bird and it was not singing but it had bright yellow spectacles (unlike blue-headed), olive green back, yellow-washed sides, and a white throat and belly (unlike yellow-throated). By process of elimination I think it had to be a white-eyed vireo. The only thing I didn't see was the white iris. If anyone has time to head down there today, I'd love a confirmation! The bird was seen just south of the tall poplars. For those of you not familiar with the wet woods, you can find the poplars by walking down the main trail from the gate, and then taking a side trail on the left before you enter the heart of the wet woods. The poplars are the only trees with lots of green leaves at the moment so they should be easy to find.

I had an odd looking vireo in the same location around noon on Saturday. Grey head, faint but apparent white spectacles, large black eye, no trace of a white iris, and an olive back. Very active, it was feeding at mid height in the poplars. Tried to get a photo, but the bird was so active, almost warblerlike, that it was hard to zoom in on it. Looked more like a drab Bell's than a White-eye--not a lot of yellow in the flanks, and the specs were definitely white, not yellow. I'm very familiar with Blue-headed, Warbling, and Red-eyed--it was none of those, and it lacked the eyeline that you find in a Philadelphia. Can't say for sure what it was, but anyone in the area may want to keep an eye open.
