Chick or girlfriend

I saw this on my late afternoon walk, so sweet and I really want to find out whether he is feeding his chick or his girlfriend. Please help.

I would say it's a young bird being fed. There's a lot of speckling along the sides of the breast. Adults have a clean white breast all the way across.

I would say adult feeding young. We've had Downies and Hairies visiting our feeder for many years and we have never seen an adult male feeding an adult female. What we have seen time after time is the adult male chasing the adult female off of the feeder.
Besides, it's that time of year, we've been seeing the adults feeding young in our yard for some time now.
