The Beare hill ponds were not a scene of avian drama today, although the perimeter of it
in spots was certainly a stage for noisy antics, careening stones, and adolescent hijinks.
The essentials included Bufflehead (male and female), Green-winged Teal and Greater
Yellowlegs. The B-heads stayed out in the middle of the upper pond where they annoyingly
persist due to the requisite depth for diving, while the GW Teal often came out onto the
narrow muddy banks but well out of reach of the public access points. I relocated with effort
and sat and waited for them to pass by but that plan ran out of time to execute. The story
of my life. Greater Yellowlegs are more tolerant of photographers so it was just a matter of
observing the direction of the shorebird's movement and heading it off. In other words, the
B-heads and the Teal were beyond the reach of my lens but the one with the flashy legs was
worth the travail.
