After traversing a treacherous mudflat that could have swallowed me whole without leaving a hole but settled for a rubber boot, I reached the near firmer edges of what would pass for an island during more aqueous times and surveyed the scene, ostensibly ruined by the sight of my leaning boot sleeve sticking out of the mud. Then, as my gaze fell in disgust, I saw it, right there in the miry .... mire. A message left by former inhabitants, a weathered sign of itinerant occupation, a form of accidental cuneiforme. These scratchings are undecipherable but suggest that there was a time in the not too distant past when there was some urgent footwork afoot. Alas, I’ve missed the peep show once again.
