Last week I was walking along the Orillia waterfront boardwalk at 4:30PM (where the boats dock)  and I saw a small bat flying back and forth skimming the water. I stood watching it and after about  5 minutes it flew a few feet in front of me and landed in a small bush at the edge of the boardwalk. I am not sure what species of bat it was but I could see it was hanging upside down and not moving. I noticed Dinusaur posted a great photo of a brown bat flying in the daytime in Aug 2021. I saw bats clinging to tree trunks in Costa Rica but I have never seen them flying around before in the daylight.

Keen observation! The Eastern Red bat and Hoary bat both roost in bushes/trees, but the Hoary does it in groups ... kinky. The Tri-coloured bat also roosts in foliage in a solitary fashion just like the Eastern red. The Hoary is bigger and more often seen but you claim to have witnessed a daylight sortie of a single bat. The Tri-coloured is endangered and is therefore probably not what you saw. The Eastern red is less than half the size of the Hoary. All other bats roost in cavities, either natural ones or within crevices of man-made structures ... not bushes. Maybe it was a totally alien species ... like a bat outta hell. You birders in Orillia have all the fun! I saw a mouse the other day. I guess that doesn't count, eh.
