I just love birding on Toronto Islands this time of year, it is my favourite type of birding in Toronto. Walking along the airport fence towards Hanlan's point in the late afternoon sunshine, accompanied by an orchestra of cicadas and working on the multitude of migrating songbirds, is hard to beat. I truly recommend you head out there if you get a chance.
Yesterday I spent the last 2.5 hours of the day before sunset (7.30pm) on the Island, mainly near Ward's Island (behind the houses) and along the airport fence near Hanlan's point. I found 10 species of warblers (including magnolia, black-throated blue and green, chestnut-sided, black and white, and an unidentified mourning/connecticut warbler) and I'm sure there would have been more to find, had I spent some more time on the Island. Most abundant warbler: black-throated green. Didn't see a single yellow-rumped! Too early in the season?
I found most birds on Ward's Island (behind the houses) and near Trout pond, while "the trap" (near Centre Island) was rather quiet this late in the day.
