Hello all,

I am taking a course in writing for children and would like to write a piece about pileated woodpeckers for my final assignment.  If anyone has any interesting/fun/unusual stories about encounters with this woodpecker, I would love to hear about them!

I'm sure you can have fun with the 'Pill-ee-ated', 'Pie-lee-ated' pronunciation thing... you know 'to-may-to, to-mah-to'...

Feeling punchy after a busy day,
Joe

I found a mating pair in Earl Bales Park last year and got a few good shots. Caught them in the middle of making a nest. I checked on them a couple times but it seems they abandoned the nest about a month later. I did see someone with a huge Canon lens looking for them. They were close to the nest but I didn't mention that I knew where it was. I had posted online at the time they were in the area and possibly that resulted in the abandonment of the nest. Next time I'm keeping my mouth shut:o) Here's a couple links to some shots of them.
