Beare Wetland

We saw this area written up in an article in the Toronto Star.  We went to visit today and they've done a wonderful job creating this wetland.  There are ponds all over the place and wooded areas along the Rouge River to explore.  We saw 24 species, including two male Indigo Buntings, an Eastern Kingbird, four American Black Ducks, a pair of Shovellers, a Belted Kingfisher, three Turkey Vultures, and a Grey Catbird.

Directions: 401 to Meadowvale, go north past Sheppard to the Toronto Zoo overpass, and take the ramp eastbound to the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre.  Park there and follow the paved road east on foot to the Friends of the Rouge Watershed sign.

Out there this morning,

2 Eastern Meadowlarks, a few Spotted Sandpipers, many Killdeer, Northern Flicker, Baltimore Oriole, 2 Turkey Vultures, the usual RWBB, Tree & Barn Swallows, Grackles, Goldfinches and Savannah Sparrows. Yes, and Mallards, Black Ducks, Geese and a couple of Trumpeter Swans.

There were a few vireos in the trees on the way down.

Didn't see the Bobolinks, but was told they were further up the hill.

Heard lots of frogs and saw a few turtles.
