In High Park today I had a glimpse of an unusual woodpecker [to me... not a downey, hairy, pileated or flicker.] It was quite high up in an oak. Light/grey back, strong red-head flash. Robin sized. Sapsucker or red-bellied  woodpecker? Couldn't get a good enough sighting to tell. Any ideas what it likely was? Thanks

It sounds like a Red-bellied.  They're not too common in Toronto, but Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are even less common in December.

Where in the park did you see it?  (There's a CBC next week.)

Thanks, yes, the red-bellied woodpecker was my "choice" from Sibleys but it was a new sighting for me. The woodpecker was high  in the oaks near the castle playground and flew west to the oaks near the little zoo in that swooping flight pattern we see from most woodpeckers.
