A pileated woopecker spent most of the day in one tree in Taylor Creek Park about 100 ft behind my house. I first noticed it around 10 am and I watched it most of the time (except for 2 hours when I was out shopping) up until 4:00 pm. I had a great view of it whacking holes in the tree, feeding and sometimes just resting. In the late afternoon its crest was backlit by the sun glowing like a red flame.

It was a nice surprise to end the year with. #58 on the list of birds I've seen from my deck since moving to this location 2 years ago.

The Pileated Woodpecker returned to the same tree on January 1. He spent about an hour in the same location before hopping up to the top of the tree and taking off. No sign of him on the 2nd or today.
