I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to see a new Red-necked Grebe nest under construction at Sam Smith Park. This one is the end of the logs attached to the raft at the west end of the harbour. That sounds a bit confusing: There's an orange and yellow raft west of the docks. There are some logs attached to it that (I think) are used to protect the docks from ice damage. The nest is at the free end of the logs. Yesterday, and again this evening, I observed them adding material to the nest and mating atop it.
This doesn't appear to be the same pair that built the first nest. There is still a pair hanging around that one, but I haven't seen any sign of rebuilding. There is also a third pair in the harbour area, but no sign of a nesting attempt from them.
