I was getting groceries at Loblaws and decided to take a walk to the back/side of the parking lot. That backs on to Crowthers Woods, which is part of the old wooded area surrounding the Don River and that houses a lovely poop filtration plant.

but....for those who want an easy way to spot some birds, it looks like it may be a nice find.
standing in the parking lot, i observed (in 10 minutes):

-1 VERY hungry and unafraid hairy woodpecker (he was very fat)
-1 downy woodpeckers
-5 juncos
-chickadees
-3 nuthatches
-1 beautiful cardinal

if you walk around the paths - and you don't have to descend much - you can find more downy woodpeckers (i spotted another 3 and heard a few more). also spotted what were likely a few robins

you can pretty much sit in your car and watch the birds fly around the fence. very easy and basic birding spot.

That's a favourite spot of mine. I work in the area and, on warm weather days, I often eat my lunch while parked in the Loblaws parking lot facing the woods. There's always a lot of Cardinals, Chickadees, Brown Creepers and Downies. A real treat is dining on Olde Yorke fish and chips and enjoying the birds and solitude of the area.

I've also seen a number of northern mockingbirds there over the past few years.

This forum is not the place to insult picids with eating disorders. As a co-founder of Weight Watchers For Woodpeckers, let me tell you a thing or two.

Okay; I can only think of one. Did you take the time to roll your window down and yell something like, "Have another hot dog, Tubby!"?

There goes everyone else's chance to see El Blimpo for their winter list -- he's probably too ashamed to appear after reading your post.

Thanks. Thanks a lot.

I left my office space for ten minutes, and I see that my aunt, who is, er, "big-boned," saw opportunity knocking (or tapping, if you like) and managed to post a rather defensive mini-tirade re the chubby hairy woodpecker reported  a while ago.

I've advised her to register here, and post independently, rather than forcing me to spend time to ensure all that I'm quite careful about leaving this machine on-line and unattended.

Again -- I had nothing to do with that post, and have the utmost respect for zygodactylous (with a few three-toed exceptions) wood-boring avians.

You have no idea what it's like.

Just wondering if the above mentioned 'fat' Hairy Woodpecker had cankles?
