Last year I first confirmed a Screech Owl calling from an evergreen tree (spruce perhaps) almost every night during the winter.....
As I was walking to the grocery store tonight at 10pm, I heard the same drumming trill that quickly notified me he was back in his
favorite tree for a second winter.
Does anyone know if they spend all year in 1 territory, or if they have wintering grounds that they set up? I don't really remember him calling at night during the warmer seasons...
The lady that owns the house is lucky to have this guy in her yard. She is one of the few people in the suburban neighborhood that keep their yard in a naturally wooded state, very brushy and with old-growth trees. The houses are at least 50 or 60 years old and there are a few trees that look closer to 80 or 100 years old in the area, so there are enough trees to support this little owl's needs.
This is very close to Yonge and Steeles, so I feel lucky to have this little owl setting up his house in the area again.
