Hi everyone. I was at Lake Aquitaine today between 10am - 12:30pm. Around 10:15am, park employees told me there's a "huge hawk" eating something - so, I went looking for it.
Red-tailed Hawk (imm. Eastern) pigging out on a squirrel! Can't believe how close I got to this hawk and he/she was totally relaxed. Could see and hear the tearing, saw a string of intestines being eaten plus various chunks of meat being gulped down.
That is one big hawk! I will assume this is the same "huge hawk" eating a squirrel that I had just missed seeing yesterday.
About 2 feet directly above the hawk were 3 Blue Jays, 2 Cardinals (1m, 1f) and 2 Chickadees. Then a squirrel walked right in front of the hawk!
Sighted at East end of lake, close to exercise machine #4. I was watching this hawk from about 10:20am - 11:50am.
Days like today, I wish I had a camera!
Lake Aquitaine: SE corner of Glen Erin Dr./Aquitaine Ave., behind the Meadowvale Community Centre.
Note: 1:25pm ... two RTH (imm. Eastern) just flew past my livingroom window and were heading North towards Maplewood Park! (Maplewood Park: East side of Glen Erin Dr., just North of Aquitaine Ave.)
Note #2: 1:30pm ... one Sharp-shinned Hawk just flew past my building, heading West.
