My wife and I are interested in visiting this winter and would appreciate any tips including places to stay and bird. Many thanks in advance. You can respond privately to khmo@empacc.net. We're field biologists with a rainbow of natural history interests.

Amherst Island is a nice place to visit. There have been problems with too many visitor to "Owl Woods" in the past - to the extent that reports from there are discouraged. However, this link provides a reasonable description, http://www.neilyworld.com/neilyworld/amherst.htm. We have never stayed overnight - but there are a few B & B's that sound nice - this link seems pretty comprehensive - http://www.amherstisland.on.ca/index.htm.

You have to take a ferry over to the island - we have found it best to arrive early - here is the schedule - http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/ferry/

The roads to Owl Woods are not really roads - if there is no snow - they can be quite muddy.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Bernie

Thanks Bernie! We had a Saw-whet on our CBC yesterday. Understand the need to protect as we do the same down here.

Thanks all! Given the apparent paucity of owls in Ontario we've opted for visiting the Rhode Island coast for seabirds in lieu of an Ontario visit.
