2 years ago I hung a finch feeder, and filled it with Nijer Seed and all summer long, we had the most beautiful goldfinches visit us daily! I think we had a few others as well like perhaps a purple finch but I'm still not sure who / what else I saw!
Anyhow, I hung the feeder, freshly washed and filled with brand new nijer seed last summer, and nada. Not one gold finch ever paid a call. Actually, no finches came to call.
I have just purchased two new feeders and filled them each and hung them - the one is a finch feeder with nijer seed, and the other is a regular feeder full of safflower seed. We usually get cardinals and doves, and chickadees -- this year, only the Cardinals have dropped by so far.
I don't do the gardening thing. We have a huge, cedar lined back yard, and a huge oak (?) tree in our backyard as well where birds like to hide and hang out. I hung the feeders off the back deck along the bars for the gazebo thing, where we've always had them....
My question is, how can I try to get the goldfinches back!? And what other seed should I put out? I'd love to get some orioles this year, and anything else that is colorful -- any help appreciated!

ALSO - I'll mention now that this afternoon at Thickson's Woods, I saw my first goldfinches of the year today!
