Hi everyone,
I know everyone goes to the spit for the birds but yesterday I tried to do a spring reptile/amphibian walk and it went quite well!
There are lots of Garter snakes around in the baselands, plenty of painted turtles in various places, bullfrogs and greenfrogs in the ponds, and one Blanding's Turtle which was the highlight for me. Also a few mammals about, beaver, muskrat, woodchuck, squirrels, rabbits (tonnes of rabbits!), coyote droppings, and rodents running around at dusk (mice or voles?). Also bats buzzing around. As always, the birding was good too ;)
I also heard from the naturalist at Kortright that western chorus frogs and spring peepers are present at the spit, though their numbers are low. I have yet to find them but I will take a look in the coming weeks.
