Yesterday, at 1:40pm, in Cedarvale ravine, just west of the Glen Cedar pedestrian bridge, I saw a large brown bat flying for about 1 minute just above the treetops before it disappeared down the ravine to the east. In the full sun we could see that it was mostly a rich brown color. I believe Big Brown Bat Eptesicus fuscus is most likely, since the color was not right for hoary, eastern red, or silver-haired, and it appeared too big for a myotis or tricoloured bat. I don't recall ever before seeing a bat flying at midday - perhaps it was particularly hungry after emerging from hibernation? Bob Kortright
