Around 10:30 this morning, I found a male Harlequin Duck off Peninsula B on the Spit. The bird was in the middle of a raft of about 300 ducks on the north side of the peninsula. Most were Redhead and Scaup with a few Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, etc. There were also at least three Tundra Swans on the shoreline. Some diagnostic photos were taken of the Harlequin that I assume will be posted to ebird.
There's a good deal of ice in the various cells, which has moved most of the waterfowl out of those locations. Off the eastern arm, Pipit Point, and the Lighthouse, the majority of the ducks I saw were Long-tails, with a few Red-breasted and Common Mergansers. If you're going out to the Spit this weekend, please note that the Red Bridge is still out of commission.
