After careful review by recognized experts, the feeling is that the photos taken yesterday show a juvenile American Golden Plover rather than a Buff-breasted Sandpiper. I was probably swayed, in my rush to judgment, by the fact the the legs appeared yellow, but this was obviously more an effect of the bright morning sun than the natural coloring. Lesson learned, and my sincere apologies to anyone who wasted time looking for the phantom bird.
