Downsview Park, like any other urban park, is now rapidly becoming a leash free dog park, thanks to some irresponsible dog owners. The other day Elias and I witnessed a freely roaming dog chased a pair of ducks who were sitting by the water's edge in the small pond near the railway track. The dog was so focussed it jumped in the cold water and chased the ducks almost to the middle of the pond until the birds flew away. The owner stood by the edge urging the dog to come back with no avail. The park patrol sometimes comes by in a car, waves at the joggers and does very little to warn the owners of these leash free dogs. Of course you would most likely see these leash free dogs off the beaten path, behind the hills among the shrubs where most of the wild life take refuge or build their nests. I sometime wonder how many of the Killdeer eggs will be trampled on in coming months.
