Robins Nest

I have a Robin's nest on a bat box (which i made with way too much interior space to entice a bat, next time I will look up how to build a bat box before I do so) that I hung on the west facing wall of my house.  The nest was built in the spring and seemed almost abandoned (is this common?) since sometime in May.  I don't exactly know at what point the birds moved back into the nest, but they have three tiny ones in there now that seem to get beigger by the hour.  Both the male and female are gathering food for the baies, which i'm assuming is common. The male seem much more agressive in the feeding, not really paying attention to me when I'm watching and the female seems to be warey of my presence.  I was just wondering if it is common for them to build a nest and leave it for a while before using it, or if these are not the birds who originally built the nest, and are the males usually there to help in the feeding, and is it not late in the season to be bringing up offspring?  Thanks for your help.

Hard to say.....it could be the original pair or different pair.

I've seen many a nest abandoned.......both partially built as well as fully completed.

I had a nest for years under my deck.

Three clutches per season was the norm.......so nestlings this late is not unusual.

I had a mini-camera mounted at the nest and observed every habit.

The feeding is split between the male and female, with the male sometimes doing a little more as the female keeps the yutes nice and warm.

Last week I removed a large nest from the side of our window A/C unit as it was blocking the intake ducts. Sadly, four tiny, naked chicks plummeted to the ground below along with two eggs which shattered revealing almost-formed chicks within. I think I may have unknowingly removed more than one nest. I was quite surprised as I thought the nest(s) were long abandoned. On a happier note, I witnessed two sparrows engaged in courtship and finally "sealing the deal".

I was going to ask if anyone knew of robins still nesting at this point in the season because the nests around my home seem to have "closed" for the season...we usually have a half dozen robins nesting around our house at any given time...(Ayton -- a little south of Owen Sound). I've always found the robins to be quick to fledge...and was wondering about a family of house wrens in one of my nest boxes...the nestlings have been around now for almost a month...
